In the 40s, 50’s and 60’s, Theresa Worman ministered to boys and girls on the radio, over the Pioneer Christian Radio station of the Moody Bible Institute in Chicago, WMBI. Her daily “Story Time” for boys and girls at 12:15 every weekday was heard by hundreds of “kids”. After she was introduced, she’d say, “Hello boys and girls!”
She related stories about “The Bangles” - Daddy and Mommy Bangle; Billy and Patty Bangle; and diminutive Joey Bangle. These were HER stories, of course. She created “The Bangle Family”.
Then, on her Sunday afternoon program “KYB Club” (Know Your Bible Club), she introduced the story by saying, “At the Bangles!” Then, a young pre-teen boy and girl, read the parts of Billy and Patty - and occasionally with five year old Joey Bangle, they acted out the stories as Aunt Theresa had written them. Along with Mommy and Daddy, of course.
On the KYB Club, there was a good bit of music, accompanied on the piano by Lucille Becker. The “Kids Choir” sang a song or two; the “Singing Lady” (Often Helen McAlerney Barth) sang a nice song; and occasionally one of the “kids” sang a solo or duet.
Another feature: “Here are the Three Preachers - Preacher number one; Preacher number two; and Preacher number three. What’s your sermon about today Preachers?” They would say together, “Three things about……….” (whatever the subject was), then, “preach“ the sermon Aunt T wrote.
Sometimes she would announce a quiz for the boys and girls to answer.
My posting named “KYB Club” has some additional information about that.
I sent the First Draft of this to Chuck Christensen for editing. After correcting some typos, Chuck said this:
For many years she invited local Chicago and Suburban Churches to visit the live programs. Often church groups and Sunday School classes would bring in groups of children who would sing a few songs…and participate in the Bible Quizzes.
She often conducted Bible Searching Contests…for the children in the studio…and obviously she expected children in the radio audience to see if they could match the speed of the regular KYB Club kids.
She introduced a seven minute Bible Study with Uncle Chuck…along with Bible Study Books children could write for. When the study books were completed kids could send them back for comment and the award of a “gold star”.
(He was “Uncle Chuck”)
What has prompted me to write about Aunt Theresa this time, was an e-mail I received from a 48 year old lady who wanted to know if I - Grandpa Mike on the Internet - could tell her where she could get one of the recorded stories of Aunt Theresa of years ago. She had in mind a “specific” recorded story. Here’s a “copy and paste” segment from her e-mail:
I tried to post a comment earlier about your blog on Aunt Theresa. I am looking for her recordings. I am looking for one in particular. It is about a family going west and they want to turn back. I had all of her records growing up. I am 48 now. We had no TV so we listened to these records until we wore them out. Do you know how I can get MP3s or a CD of all of her old albums?
She went on to list her e-mail address for me to reply to, as well as the site address for her blog that she began early in July. Though I wasn’t going to do it on my own due to privacy issues, she has encouraged me to list her e-mail address - in case someone HAS information about the Aunt Theresa stories she is interested in. It is atadiana@aol.com,
In addition, she wanted me to cite her blog site for my readers to see:
http://annajoylynn.blogspot.com/
Double clicking on this line will “bring it up”.
My reply wasn’t particularly helpful:
Thanks for visiting my blog – and for posting a comment!
At this point, nothing comes to mind about Aunt Theresa’s stories on tape.
Someone else commented on that story, but I don’t remember who. If you look at the end of my “KYB Club” posting, I imagine his name would be there.
I DO think that Moody has “Archived” many of the old programs, but I’m not sure if Story Time is one of them. You could try “moody.edu”, and then pick some related site given, maybe.
Though I didn’t tell her his e-mail address (for privacy purposes), I did send an e-mail to Chuck Christensen, the Producer of the program. He replied that he also wasn’t aware of any tapes/discs in the Moody Archives, but he gave me the name of the man now in charge of the Archives. I sent that name to the lady.
She later e-mailed:
Thanks for your feedback. I just finished creating a Face Book Group called Fans of Aunt Theresa Story Time on WMBI. You can join it if you have face book. I put out there some pictures that I found on the Internet and the address of where I downloaded some of the recordings. I just had my daughter listen to some of the stories. They really are timeless.
So………I rejoined Facebook, using my current e-mail address. I had joined last year in Indiana with the OLD address.
Expectedly, I then ended up with TWO Facebook sites, and I didn’t know how to delete the first one. I was (and still am) a “green horn” about Facebook. Joyce’s daughter-in-law (Missy) did some research for me, and told me how to delete the old one.
I indicated to Facebook that I wanted to do that. They right away said, “Jim will miss you.” “Carrie will miss you.” “Molly will miss you.” “Paige will miss you.” , etc. (Some of my Face book “friends” from before.)
ALL BY MYSELF, I concluded that before I clicked on the final button to delete the old account (I had to give a reason for deleting, too. The reason was, “another Facebook account”, of course). I typed a note to each of my, I think, five friends, to tell them about my new course of action. To save re-typing each note, “computer-savvy Mike” did the old “copy and paste” trick and sent the same note to all five.
FINALLY, I now had only ONE Facebook account.
How did I know which account was the old one? I looked at the picture I had posted on each one. They were different. The OLD one had a full body view of “ME”, while the new one had only a head shot. It worked!
Whew!
I had to do some experimenting on how to “navigate” around Facebook, but somehow, I found the new “Aunt Theresa Story Time” site, and clicked.
There was the picture of Aunt Theresa and all the kids - including our three - the picture that John gave me a copy of, and which I had put on my earlier “KYB Club” posting:
I then commented on that, mentioning the names of, and pointing out, our 3 “kids” in the photo. Martha on Aunt Theresa’s lap; Johnny leaning on the table front left; and Jimmy, far right in the back, with the Bible in his left hand. This was taken in about 1956, I think.
The next day, I was still a little in the dark about “surfing” around Facebook, so I asked our “Intrepid Activity Director” Timi for help. (The “intrepid” part is MY word.) She’s a computer whiz, and professional photographer, actually. In 5 minutes time, she showed me how to find my friends, and how to post, or read comments.
Son-of-a-gun!
Question: How am I going to have time to mess around with Facebook, when I spend an inordinate amount of time on my blog, and on other computer/Internet activities already? Not to mention the 3 or 4 books I read in a week.
Oh well, having someone who remembers Aunt Theresa, and maybe copies of some of her stories, is probably worth it. Not to mention, the new contact I’ll have with family members and friends who have “invited” me on Face book - 26 already! Well, not all of them “invited” me, actually. I found out, in some cases, that they were already on Facebook, and I just had to ask them “if they’d be my friends”.
Timi told me that I could possibly find someone on there who was in my High School Graduating Class at Mechanicsburg High School, in 1942.
Glory be!
Would some of those “old timers” be on Facebook? Well, THIS old timer is, anyhow. She DID find someone in the class a year behind me - 1943. I’ll look into that.
I think I need to take a nap!
Later: I found the 1943 Mechanicsburg High School graduate, named Joe Ralston. The name was awfully familiar to me, but I somehow couldn’t come up with a face. (I AM 85, you know.) I sent him a Facebook message.
He wrote back, and reminded me that he had visited us in Chicago while he lived in Cleveland, probably 50 years ago! NOW I remember. I gave him my e-mail address, so we will be corresponding.
I’ve heard about these things happening on Facebook.
Now I KNOW!
